What's in a name? Vintage Clear Toy Candy/ Sugar Toys/Barley Sugar Candy by Keeley's Confections an original recipe in authentic 19th Century Designs

We're working hard at Keeley's Confections to bring back a Nostalgic favorite from the 19th century. Originally imported to the United States as "Sugar Toys" the candy was a Christmas and Easter holiday tradition.

Our products are gluten free and produced with a centuries old original recipe, in the traditional way. They do not contain barley but are sometimes referred to as "barley candy" a term that became generic for boiled sugar candy as early as 1820.

At Keeley's Confections our name stands for quality now, just as it did when our roots in the candy business begin in the late 19th Century, as Philadelphia Pennsylvania was developing into the confectionery capital of the United States. Our great grand uncle A.C. Keeley until his death in 1923, operated a candy factory at 2215 N. Front Street in Philadelphia. He was considered the largest Candy Distributor in Eastern Pennsylvania. He previously held the title as President of the National Confectioners Association, President of the Pennsylvania Confectioners Association. Having held the office of the President of the Philadelphia Confectionery Jobbers Association for 24 years.

In Pennsylvania the candy became well known as Clear Toy Candy.

A. C. Keeley was a business associate and personal friend of Valentine Clad one of the Original Philadelphia Manufacturers of the Clear Toy Candy Molds.

During the Victorian Era most Children would awaken to find only an apple or orange, some nuts , and a piece of Clear Toy Candy in their stocking following a visit from Old St. Nicholas. The candy molded into the shape of trains, boats,dogs, cats, etc. would be played with as a toy until the child tired, or simply could not wait any longer to enjoy the candy. the candy would be washed and broken in pieces to enjoy.

We have spent nearly 30 years collecting molds with Vintage Designs to allow us to create and offer this time honored treat.
